Hotel Review: Magic Hotel Solheimsviken, Bergen, Norway

If you are looking for a clean, modern hotel with excellent service and a unique, fresh & funky design, look no further than the Magic Hotel Solheimsviken. Located almost equidistant between the Bergen Airport and the city’s most charming Bryggen Harbor, it is the perfect location for exploring everything that Bergen has to offer.

From the airport, you could take a 10 minute taxi ride to the hotel. Or you can save some money and take the Bergen Light Rail to the Danmarksplass stop, which features a slow, but lovely ride through the Norwegian countryside on the way downtown. Once you get off the Light Rail, the hotel is just a three minute walk away! Also, consider purchasing a Bergen Card, which includes free rides on busses and the Bergen light railway, as well as free entry or discounted admission to museums and attractions, events and sightseeing tours and great discounts on restaurants and parking.

Magic_Hotel_Bergen-1Prepare yourself to be greeted with a punch of bright colors and patterns from the moment you walk through the door. The lobby contains hot pink chairs and a psychedelic blue and black floor. The vibe is a combination of a hip discotheque and a sweet sixteen’s birthday party. Either way, you know you’re going to have a fun stay in this unique hotel!

Magic_Hotel_Bergen-4Although there is a definite punch of design in the lobby and public areas of the hotel, the rooms are surprisingly, very minimal with just a couple of pops of design and color. My room was a bit small, but had a stunning view and super comfy bed.

The hotel has 217 rooms to choose from so if you feel like splurging a little more, upgrade to one of the larger rooms for more space and fun and fantastic design accents like the womanly shaped lamp in the photo above. Every room has free wifi, a tv and some rooms even allow pets!

Magic_Hotel_Bergen-10The hotel also has a fabulous rooftop bar with an amazing panoramic view over Bergen. Sadly, it was raining when I was there, but I managed to sneak out and snap a couple of quick photos. Word is they are planning to install a roof so you can soon enjoy the rooftop patio no matter what the weather!

There is also a beautiful restaurant called Bergtatt, which offers a warm and inviting dining room and features an Italian-inspired menu of delicious looking pizza and pastas. The restaurant also serves an included and tasty buffet breakfast in the morning. Make sure you try their freshly baked, homemade bread with butter and blueberry preserves. Paired with a cup of strong coffee, it was like a warm hug on a rainy morning!

  1. I do love a really bright colour palette! It’s the perfect blend of sleek, contemporary style with a more playful touch. And that room is huge! The rooftop bar looks like the perfect place to unwind with a drink or a bite to eat; you’ll have to go back to visit when it’s sunny!

  2. What a funky and modern hotel. Love that it is centrally located and that you can take public transportation to it. I always prefer that to a cab. Great tip on the pass that should save some cash. I really love the view from the rooftop bar and the rooms look comfortable. Will have to add this one for when I visit this city.

  4. Thanks for the recommendation. Sounds like Magic Hotel is a great place to stay. 🙂 We’re always looking for new, charming places for our accommodation — the clean, electric, funky feel of this hotel fits the bill for sure; you definitely captured its essence in your photos. Though I will say, the Italian fare at the restaurant came as a bit of a surprise. I like that it’s not always fish and potatoes! Adding this to my list of possibilities next time we make it to Norway and Bergen!

  6. Hi Lynne,

    How clean, neat and sleek.

Love the look of this hotel.

The overall design feel of the place – architecture, etc – works for me, because I dig clean. Not a lot of stuff.

Being globe trotters, long term, wifey and I are minimalists. Not because we want to be. But because we have to be.By design. At least if we want to stay sane.

If I dig my life like that, lean and neat, goodness knows I love similar lodging. Hate clutter. This place has no zero clutter. Good deal.

    Thanks for sharing Lynne.
